Three Poems for the Long Light

Summer evenings have a way of staying open.
These three short poems are about the long light, the hours after the work is done but before the day lets go. Read them slowly. Read them aloud if you can.
I.
The kettle hums its small religion. A book lies open, face-down, mid-thought, the way a day rests when it trusts you will return to it.
II.
We did not finish the chapter. We finished the conversation instead, which is to say we finished nothing, which is to say we will be back.
III.
Let the light stay long. Let the page wait. There is no prize for arriving at the end of a beautiful thing.
